  留学推荐信中的常见问题留学推荐信不管是不是自己写的,只要推荐人签了字,就成了一份 legitimate

  document(大致翻译成“合法的文件”)。但是由于大多数申请人态度的草率或者观念的错误,他们寄出去的推荐信往往一钱不值——根本没有起到任何作用,结果是他们白白浪费了推荐自己的机会。以下就是留学推荐信中的常见问题。

  其一,留学推荐信中用尽所有表现人类美德、才华和优秀的形容词,却没有一个具体例证。我们都知道“事实胜于雄辩”,但我们的学生在给外国人看的推荐信上却偏偏是反其道而行之。有一次我在电脑上修改一篇推荐信,其申请者就坐在我旁边看着。看到我删掉了许多用于赞美的形容词,那位同学一把抓住我的手说“再也不能删了”;好象删一个词他就少了一份美德。

  第二个问题是在留学推荐信总把申请者吹成一个大师,让人难以置信。其实,申请者都是去当学生的,如果已经是大师了,还需要去读书吗?许多学生都以教授的口吻在推荐信上表示他们“特别地钦佩”这位学生,他们“一辈子也没有碰上这样的天才” 等等。曾经有好几位申请者自己写好推荐信,准备让一位真正的经济学大师去签字。上面写着类似这样的话:“每当我的研究遇到困难,他总是成为我灵感的源泉。”如果推荐人还不如被推荐人,那推荐信的意义就荡然无存了。这样的推荐信也会让读者怀疑这位推荐人的真实水平。第三个问题是留学推荐信的内容千篇一律,让人一看就是抄的。一般的推荐信都是在对被推荐人的品德、学问大吹一番以后,开始谈到自己是怎样发现这位天才的。其中无一例外的描述是:课堂上所有别的学生都无法回答某个问题,只有这位天才站起来侃侃而谈,“显示了深厚的功底和创造力。”同样无一例外的是,在描述这样的情景时,天才都要 asking penetrating questions. penetrating 可以有暗含的意思,就是教授说话有漏洞,被这位天才给捅破了。如果要描述天才表现出来的洞察力,有许多词汇可以选择: insightful, incisive, cutting straight to the heart of things, keen. 为什么所有的人都要用 penetrating 这个词呢?更为严重的是,我看了成百上千次这样的场景描述,可是迄今为止还没有一位申请者说得出来当时到底谈论的是什么话题。

  第四,许多申请者没有正确地选择推荐者。作为推荐者一般应该具备如下几个条件。一是必须要有比被推荐者更高职位或更多的学识,这样才有能力和资格来评判被推荐者。另外一个必不可少的条件是,推荐者必须有机会了解被推荐者。所以合适的推荐人应该是教过你或指导过你的教授,或者是工作单位中的顶头上司。在一个有几万学生的大学里,一个本科毕业生让校长写了封充满溢美之词的推荐信。这说明什么?这说明这位同学很会钻营。我们千万不要低估外国教授的智力,他们并不比我们傻。有的申请者千方百计通过关系找到科学院的院士写推荐信。为了制造学术权威对其了解的假象,又是千篇一律地介绍他们是在一次学术会议上认识的。一散会他们就在大厅里就某一学术问题“进行激烈的争论”而且这一争

  论一直持续了好几年,直到写推荐信的时候。这位知名人士由此了解了申请者对学问的热爱和执着。但是究竟争论什么问题呢?从来没有人说得出来。

  其实,找有名望的推荐者远远不如找恰当的推荐者。所谓恰当的推荐者,就是那些有机会了解你的人。还有一点,许多申请者未必能想到,那些在中国颇具声望的人,他们的名声在远渡重洋以后也就消失了,起不了那么大的作用。

  最后一个问题是留学推荐信写作时马虎和草率。许多申请者一口气给自己写三封推荐信(一般要求是三封),然后让三个教授签字。这样,不仅内容相同、语气类似,用词也差不多,甚至语法和拼写错误也一模一样,更有甚者,打印的字体也是分毫不差。有一次我审读了一位申请者拿来的三封推荐信后对他说:“只有一种可能,那就是这三位教授都是未婚,并且住在一处,使用同一台电脑和打印机。”

  我所知道的关于留学推荐信的一些琐事

  最近2012fall,有不少人问小生关于留学推荐信的事情,我就干脆把一些琐事汇汇总吧。鄙人知道的情况寥寥,有些东西可能也局限于美国MS申请。有错欢迎指出。

  1、 纸推?网推?

  基本上2011fall我所关注过的美国学校,都可以接受纸推和网推两种形式。

  2、 纸推好?网推好?

  见仁见智。我这仅把自己知道的一些情况说说。

  纸推,你要在网申表格下载页面里下载每个学校纸推需要填写的文档和表格(包括推荐人姓名啊,所在学校啊,和申请人的关系啊,还有对申请人的评价什么的),然后再和推荐信一起,找导师签字,密封,然后寄给学校。理论上说,纸推会有一个快递周期的时延,要是你赶着申请,我觉得这个方法不好。

  网推,会有一页专门填写推荐人的称呼(必填)、推荐人所在学校研究室单位企业(必填)、推荐人邮箱(必填)、不知推荐结果声明(要打钩)、推荐人电话(选填)、推荐人与你的关系(选填)。填好这些之后,学校会专门给你填写的推荐人邮箱发送一封推荐信,一般这里面有需要推荐人填写的链接。推荐人点开邮件里的链接,会有专门指引的推荐链接要推荐人完成对申请人的推荐,包括保密声明,对推荐人的评价,还有要写一封推荐信(电脑上的 不要纸质签名 有的学校这项选填)。填好递交即可(递交后不可修改)。理论上说,网推是不存在时延的。

  3、 推荐信谁完成?网推里的内容谁来填?

  如果按照正规流程,上述东西都应该是导师完成的。但是由于众所周知的原因,这在天朝的高校很大程度上是不可能的,所以你需要自己完成。

  对于所有学校,你可以先准备好一份较通用的模板给某位导师。(每个导师写一个,你要准备3种不同口气不同描述角度的推荐信模板,从各个角度深入浅出又不过分地褒奖自己)

  倘若走纸推,你需要做的有,推荐信(打印出来,对每个学校做部分修改),每个学校的表格(打印出来),约导师签名(一份学校签一份,20个学校20份),然后密封,有章盖章,没章签字。寄出。理论上来说,纸推麻烦一位导师的次数在1-2次左右,不过一次耗时长,要提前预约。

  倘若走网推,你需要做的有,告诉导师网推信已发送给他,请他转发邮件给你(一个学校转一封邮件),你用你自己的邮箱收邮件,点开链接完成填写和评价还有保密声明(好假),复制电子版推荐信(不用导师手签了)。理论上来说,网推会少量多次的麻烦一位导师不停的转发邮件给你,不用预约。

  4、 邮箱必须edu的吗?edu邮箱不稳定?

  不需要。我申请的时候有企业推荐人,没有edu邮箱,照样可以收到邮件。我从没遇到过Edu邮箱收不到网推推荐信的情况,所以不必担心(要是有人遇到了,还望告诉我)。

  5、 不好意思麻烦导师啊,能不能代签?或者搞个邮箱?

  这个我不清楚对于对面学校影响如何。我想你要这样做首先得先征得这边推荐人同意,11fall我申请的时候,导师都没同意我这样做。

  6、 tips

  某些学校针对网推有防转发机制,转发邮件后网推链接会消失,这些学校列表我记得留学论坛有。我申请的时候遇到的学校有utaustin这所(这家申请巨麻烦,还不接受visa信用卡,只要mastercard)。这时候请麻烦你的导师不要点转发邮件。复制邮件内容,然后在写新邮件里面粘贴就不会丢失链接了)。

  留学推荐信范例和注意事项

  大多数学校都要求申请人提供二至三封推荐信。有力的推荐是录取的重要条件之一。推荐信要客观、公正、切忌流于形式,内容空洞,要与申请人的其它材料(如成绩单)等相符。推荐信也应注意格式、文法等。因为向来有“名师出高徒”之说。推荐信的格式与一般书信基本相同。有信头,发信日期,收信人姓名,称呼,正文,信尾谦称,签名,推荐人姓名,职称及工作单位等部分。但推荐信还应着重以下方面:

  1. 为了便于校方查阅,必须提到被推荐者的全名。

  2. 必须交待与被推荐者的认识期间(何时开始认识或认识多久),认识程度(偶尔见面或密切接触)及关系(师生关系,上下级关系,同事等)。

  3. 对被推荐者的优点介绍及评价,这是推荐信的核心。主要包括被推荐者的天赋,学习成绩,研究能力,工作经验,学习精神,组织能力,品行及个性方面。

  4. 必须表明推荐人的态度,是极力推荐还是有保留地推荐。

  最近一些学校出于各种原因,设计了推荐表格,由推荐人填写,但其主要内容也和推荐信涉及的相同。

  范例1 计算机教授推荐信

  At the request of Mr. Xizhen Chen, my former student in the Department of Computer Science, Beijing Univ. of Sciences, I am glad to write this letter furnishing my evaluation of his academic aptitude

  for your

  reference. Mr. Chen is interested in your graduate program in Computer Science.

  I came to know him in September 1987 when Mr. Chen eolled in my class on FORTRAN IV Programming, a three semesters' course. In the class he was one of the most outstanding students. At the semester final he earned a high grade of 81, which should be "A" according to our grading system. I also found him good at other studies.

  After the class, he had personal talks with me several times. He indicated a great interest in computer hardware, In my opinion, Mr. Chen has a potential in Computer Science, which can be further developed.In view of his previous achievements in this College, I am firmly convinced that Mr. Chen will make a successful graduate student. Your favorable consideration of his admission will be highly appreciated.

  范例2 商管系教授推荐信

  It gives me a great pleasure to recommend Mr. Cheng as a transfer to the School of Business Administration of your University in the summer quarter of 1989.

  During academic year 1980-1984, he was a student in our Department, World College of Journalism. I found him very diligent and intelligent. He often participated in extracurricular activities contributing a great deal to community affairs.

  Though Mr. Cheng graduated from this college 5 years ago, he keeps, contact with me very often. Worthy of mention also is his personality, honest, reliable, responsible and mature.

  I strongly recommend this promising young man and your favorable consideration and assistance to him will be very much appreciated.

  范例3 法律系教授推荐信

  I am pleased to write this letter for my former student Miss Nan Li, who graduated from this College with an L.B. degree in June 1978.

  Miss Li was admitted to the Department of Law of this College in 1974 through highly competitive entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. Even in such a selective group. Miss Li made herself distinguished. As professor and dean of the College, I have access to her records of academic work and moral conduct, In her fourth year study, I instructed her in Anglo-American Laws on Trespass. So I have known her quite well.

  Miss Li's performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. In our university and in other university here, 80 is considered "A" , the highest level.

  As far as I know, Miss Li wishes to continue her study in Law for an advanced degree. I am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study.I recommend Miss Li without reservation and shall appreciate your favorable consideration of her application.

  推荐信的注意事项:

  推荐信的份量直接关系到能否出国留学,能否获得奖学金等,作为对外联系的材料,是其中一份较为重要的文件。推荐信的目的是通过国内专家向对方介绍申请人的工作、学习和专业方向等情况。在出国申请是否成功的诸多要素中,有力的推荐信是录取的重要条件之一,其份量仅次于于本科成绩单和标准化考试(GRE、GMAT、TOEFL)成绩。

  多数学校都要求申请人提交两封到三封的推荐信,由教授、系主任或工作主管直接寄给指定的单位。

  一、选择推荐人

  推荐信是了解申请人的重要依据,在研究生课程中尤其如此。申请人可以选择现在或以前的老师、教授或雇主。推荐人必须熟悉学生的学习情况,了解学生的学习目的是否明确,在学术上是否有前途,以及学生的适应能力、创造能力、品行和特长。

  书写推荐信的最理想的人选是一封由系主任写,一封由专业课教授写,一封由自己的导师写。不过,对方若无规定,则除了自己的亲属之外,任何人皆可为推荐人。推荐人一般应具备高级技术职称,如教授、副教授、研究员、副研究员等。如果推荐人在国内外学术界享有盛誉,或者被申请就读学校聘为客座教授,或者曾经在该校讲过学,那么这样的推荐人写的推荐信就具有很强的效力了。

  二、推荐信的内容

  推荐信一般应包括下列内容:

  被推荐人的基本情况介绍。侧重于个人的毕业时间、学校、所获学位以及个人的专业经历。

  推荐人对被推荐人的基本评价。侧重于被推荐人的专业基础、个性、特点、工作态度和在学术上的前途估计。若是推荐研究生,推荐人还需进一步说明其深造学习的基础和当前所具备的研究能力。显然,恰如其分地评价被推荐人的基础、能力和前途,比言过其实的赞誉更令人情服,更具有实际意义。

  推荐人可以着重介绍被推荐人曾经获得的奖励,发表过的论文,参加过的重要学术会议,以及曾在学生组织或学术团体中的任职等来支持自己的评价。

  推荐人还必须清楚地表明被推荐人留学的身份是研究生还是访问学者,专业领域和研究方向是什么。

  如果大学提供了现成的推荐表格,则必须按这类表格认真逐项填写。推荐表格中一般有学生综合评估的一项,即要求推荐人说明该生在所教的学生中应列为前5%,10%,或25%等。这种评估是指教授的个人评价,可以稍高一点。另外,推荐表格上常有许多难以填写的项目,遇到这种情形可填"I don't know",亦不致对该生的评价有何严重影响。

  推荐信尾必须有推荐人的亲笔签名,最好直接由推荐人寄给学校招生办官员或申请就读学校的系主任。如果由被推荐人寄送,可将推荐信装入信封内封好后由推荐人在信封口处亲笔签名以示保密。信封正面注明

  "A Letter Of Recommendation",表明这是一封推荐信。

  推荐信样例 一(管理)

  Dear Sir/Madam:

  In the capacity of the former dean of "Dalian Management School" of Dalian University of Technology(DUT), I am writing with pleasure to recommend Mr. Cai to your esteemed university.

  I got to know him personally when he was taking the course--Methodology of Management Research (or Methods of Management as stated in his transcripts), a course I taught, concerning basic research methods, especially quantitative approach to management research. Then he took one of my other courses--Advanced Strategic Management. Mr. Caleb showed great aptitude on both courses and he got 78 on both, which seem a bit lower, but if you take the difficulty of the test papers and my strict grading into account, you will understand why such scores are still among the top five. Undoubtedly, he got excellent scores on other courses and ranked among the top 5% of his class after the first year of graduate study.

  To my knowledge, Mr. Cai is not only strong in academics, but also in sports and social activities. He was the captain of the soccer team of graduateschool of DUT and led the team to play in the soccer league of our university for two successive years. He was also one of the main founders of the first academic club--"Management Forum" of the "Dalian Management School" of DUT.

  After I left DUT, he still keeps in touch with me from time to time and I am pleased to see that he proved his outstanding capability in both research and teaching position. By now, he seems to be at least as proficient in English as most of his former classmates in the Gifted Class.
